Nikon Inc. reported a third-quarter operating loss of ¥98.8 billion compared to a profit of ¥2.3 billion in the same period last year, as the company faced significant challenges across its business segments. Sales for the quarter fell 6.0% year-over-year to ¥171.0 billion, while the company posted a net loss of ¥92.5 billion, reversing from a profit of ¥3.3 billion a year earlier.
The substantial operating loss was largely attributed to a ¥90.6 billion impairment charge in its Digital Manufacturing business related to subsidiary SLM. Nikon determined that future sales growth at SLM would be considerably lower than anticipated at the time of acquisition.
In response to these results, Nikon revised its full-year guidance downward, reducing its sales forecast to ¥675.0 billion, a cut of ¥5.0 billion. The company now expects an operating loss of ¥100.0 billion for the fiscal year ending March 2026, a significant reduction of ¥114.0 billion from previous estimates.
Even when excluding one-time factors, Nikon is projected to post an operating loss of approximately ¥10.0 billion for the current fiscal year.
